If Carrara is the classic, Calacatta is the statement. Whiter in the field, bolder in the veining, the thick grey and gold veins that draw the eye across a kitchen island. It is rarer than Carrara, it costs considerably more, and it is usually chosen as the showpiece of the room. Which means the stakes of getting protection wrong are higher than with any other stone.
What makes Calacatta different
Calacatta and Carrara are both Italian, both calcium carbonate, both marbles. The difference is appearance and rarity. Calacatta has a whiter background and dramatic, well-defined veining, often with warm gold tones. It is quarried in smaller quantities. A Calacatta island bench can run well past fifteen thousand dollars by the time it is fabricated and installed.
Why the stakes are higher

The vulnerability is identical to Carrara. Calcium carbonate reacts with acid and etching is the result. But two things make Calacatta less forgiving. First, the whiter field shows staining more readily than a greyer stone. Second, the cost. An etch ring on a Carrara splashback is a frustration. An etch ring across the face of a Calacatta island, the feature you chose the whole kitchen around, is a different kind of loss. Sealer slows staining but does not stop etching, so sealing alone leaves the statement piece exposed.
The right protection for Calacatta
DURAFLEX SPF Ultra is the correct film for Calacatta. Polyurethane, not vinyl. Applied over the sealed stone and heat-sealed at every edge. Every acidic spill lands on the film, never the marble. The dramatic veining and white field stay exactly as they were, permanently protected. The film is invisible, so the statement the stone makes is unchanged.
On a Calacatta island, protection is not optional
DURAFLEX SPF Ultra protects Calacatta permanently. Obligation-free estimates across Australia.
Precision befitting the stone

A Calacatta island is often a single large expanse with a waterfall edge, mitred corners, and a feature no one wants interrupted by a visible seam or a lifting edge. DURAFLEX uses automotive-trained installers whose edge work and seam placement come from automotive paint protection film. No chemicals during installation. The film is heat-sealed so it cannot lift at the edges of that waterfall or around the sink. DURAFLEX SPF Ultra is independently fire-tested by CSIRO to AS/NZS 1530.3 and made with food-safe materials, with a 10-year warranty. On a stone this important, that is the standard to hold any product to.
